Game and Film Genres
I decided to start my assignment by
putting pen to paper and coming up with different genres that relate to both
films and games. I decided to do this before rushing into ideas because it will
mean I would not have to keep starting because the ideas did not work out. This
will mean I can get the characteristics of each genre; then I can see how I can
incorporate them into my ideas for either a film or a game.
I did this in the form of a mind map;
I used a mind map because there are lots of different types of characteristics
making it easier to add new ideas rather than rewriting a list. As well as
writing characteristics I have also written examples of films of games in that
genre. This will then allow me to research the examples and get ideas and
colours, images and textures etc.

Ideas Scenario
Now I have put all the genres
characteristics into mind maps, it has allowed me to start thinking about the
ideas for a game or a film. I have decided to create one idea for a film and a
game; this is because it will give me an opportunity to let my creative side
out. It will also let me think of two different types of entertainment styles
and different approaches they take to their story lines. I will then decided
which one of the ideas I wish to used based on what kind of effects I can use
for each.

This is the idea for my game; it
would be a mix of platform and a puzzle game. It is a merge of both Super Mario
(platform) and Portal (puzzle).
The reason why I choose this
combination of genres was because I liked the idea of the bright colour that
are well known in most platform games; this is appealing to people especially
to children. It also shows what you can do with textures on top of the bright
colours.
I also like the idea of puzzles,
because everyone likes a good puzzle whether they are good at them or not. It
will also make the game more interesting and more productive.
Game Play
The game works like Super Mario where
the main character travels through many levels; it also travels across
platforms just like Mario. However, these platforms would be made of branches,
rocks and grass etc.
It also works just like Portal, where
the characters use portals to get from one place to another, this game will
have holes throughout the levels. The character will travel through the holes
in the trees, stone or grass and take the character from on platform to
another. The puzzle side of this is where you will have to travel through these
holes/portals to get to certain platforms which will take you to the next
stage.
Characters
- Squiggle is a grey squirrel and is the main character of the game. He wears a top hat with goggles and a scarf and a backpack.
- Squiger is a black squirrel and the main villain of the game. He has a red eye and wears a cowboy hat with cowboy boots.
- Hedgey is a hedgehog who becomes Squiggle’s friend and ally throughout the game. He wears a leather jacket and sun glasses.
- Hooter is an owl who also becomes Squiggle’s friend and ally throughout the game. He wears a monocle and a collar and tie.
- Croaky is a frog who also becomes Squiggle’s friend and ally throughout the game. He wears a green hat like robin hood and a red belt around its waist.
- Black squirrel army these are black squirrels which follow Squiger and are scattered around the levels.
Story Line
The basic story of the game is that
there is a mystical powerful nut which has been guarded for generations by the
grey squirrel gang, however one day Squigger the leaded of the black Squirrels
stole the nut under the guard of Squiggle. Squiggle has been sent by the Grey
Squirrel Elders to retrieve the nut back where it belongs. Squiggle makes
friends along the way to help him with his quest across trees, air, water and
rock.

This is the idea for my film it will
mainly be an action and fantasy film; however it can also spread to several
different genres. I decided to do an action fantasy because I as a lover of
films find action and fantasy more appealing and more entertaining as well it
is more invigorating and eye catching.
I got the idea from a source which
gave me the idea. It was a book which I have read and come across again, which
was also made into a film. It was called Ink Heart. It is about a man who can
read stories and brings the characters to life. He passes these gifts to his
daughter. I though, I would take this sort of idea and give it my own twist.
Characters
- Joanna is a girl who finds out that she has powers that she does not realise. She has the powers to travel through stories.
- Sandi is Joanna father who betrays her, however helps her regain freedom from her powers by finishing the story.
- Deula is an evil witch who is part of a story known as ‘Page Traveler’. She captures Joanne and tries to take her powers to roam free from her book.
- Grundy and Grouchy are two of the witches henchman and are a useless pair of nitwits, who always blunder and never get the job done.
Story Line
There is a young girl named Joanna
who recently left an orphanage and was known to be a book worm. She would dream
all the different stories in her head word for word till one day. She finds
that she is actually in the story and she cannot escape her fate till she has
completed the story.
However, she is not alone. She meets
and travels with a tall stranger named Sandi who she feels she has a connection
with, who also has the exact same powers as her. He explains everything to her,
but betrays her; however Joanne is heartbroken because the man who betrays her
is her own father.
The evil witch known as Deula, who
wants Joanna powers, because it will then allow her to roam free into the real
world and take over it. Joanna tries to stop her but a big sacrifice has to be
made and her father Sandi sacrifices himself for his daughter’s life and
freedom.

The idea I decided to take on was my
idea of the film, Page Traveler. I choose this over the game Squiggle and the
Mystical Nut. This was because I felt that this would be more challenging but
also allows me to be more creative then the game would provide.
It is mainly due to the basic colours
and textures that would be used, but also the techniques. This will mean that
it would just include picking photos/textures, selecting parts of a image and
shaping.to be honest it is not much of a challenge when it comes to creativity.
This also means that I am losing out on tools and effects that I could be using
that Adobe has to offer me.
Another reason was the selection of
images. There would be a greater range for the film; mainly due to the fact
that the film can have various ranges of colour and brightness. This will work
with different effects, making it a detailed, realistic and effective.
